Halaqah #9 - 2/14/07

What does sunnah mean?

-to mold, shape, prescribe, introduce, to enact, to establish, to pass a law

-linguistically, it means way, course, rule or manner of acting, path, conduct of life.

-he who does sunnah initiates, starts, establishes a way or path

-we refer sunnah as tradition

-Islamically, it means a praiseworthy action


There are five categories of fiqh:

  1. Fardh (obligatory): An action, which incurs reward for one who does it sincerely seeking to follow the commandments of Allah while he who leaves it is deserving of punishment.

  2. Mandub( recommended): An action, which incurs reward for one who does it sincerely seeking to follow the commandments of Allah, but is not punished for neglecting it.

  3. Mubah (Allowed): An action which one is not rewarded for doing and is not punished for leaving.

  4. Makrooh (Disliked): An action for which one is rewarded for not doing but is not punished for doing.

  5. Haram (Prohibited): An action which incurs reward for one who does not do it sincerely seeking to follow the commandments of Allah but is deserving of punishment for doing it.
